About Us
RiverRail is a welcoming model railroad operations group based in La Crosse, Wisconsin, known for its collaborative spirit, realistic operating sessions, and diverse layout roster.
RiverRail brings together model railroaders of all experience levels to enjoy the art and logistics of realistic train operations. With 15 operating layouts and several more under construction, the group offers a wide variety of railroading experiences—from mainline freight to terminal switching. Their emphasis is on fellowship, learning, and low-stress fun, making it easy for newcomers to get involved. Sessions are held frequently, and while many fill up quickly, layout owners often welcome guests who want to explore the hobby.
Operating sessions typically last four hours, with a mid-session break that’s as much about camaraderie as it is about food—whether it’s home-cooked, pizza delivery, or a visit to a local pub. Jobs are assigned by drawing numbers, and new operators are encouraged to choose simpler roles or pair up with experienced members. This thoughtful approach ensures that everyone feels supported and engaged, regardless of skill level. The group uses its website for session sign-ups, and new members are asked to register to help prevent spam and maintain a secure environment.
Beyond the sessions, RiverRail maintains a strong sense of legacy and community. They honor
